In five days only: a patient was diagnosed as suffering from a stroke, received immediate and preventive treatment, performed a comprehensive round of tests to check the need for carotid artery surgery, underwent the surgery and was discharged  home after recovery.

A stroke is a clinical event in which time plays a very important element. The faster the diagnosis is made and the faster the treatment is given, the less are the chances of severe disability. The exact diagnosis includes a physical examination, ascertaining the personal medical background and the details of the current event, complex imaging tests, and laboratory tests. The treatment provided includes administration of drugs and, sometimes, invasive surgical procedures. In many cases, there is a need for a multi-system clinical work of neurologists, the emergency medicine department, an imaging department, vascular specialists, and often also a cardiac intensive care department.

Recently, a woman suffering from symptoms of a stroke – significant weakness of one side of the body and inability to speak – came to the ER at Laniado Hospital. The patient, a resident of Netanya Ms. Yelena Sheveliov, was immediately admitted for a CT scan. The test was deciphered and clearly showed a stroke, an event caused by the narrowing of the carotid arteries and the embolism of a blood clot to the brain. The patient was treated by the neurological service team headed by Dr. Shoshana Hadar. She received immediate drug treatment to dissolve clots, and at the same time she was hospitalized for further monitoring and treatment. Later, a procedure began in preparation for surgery to expand the carotid arteries, in order to allow normal blood flow through the neck to the brain. Usually, patients wait for a surgery several weeks, until all the required tests are completed and until the surgery itself. However, in the case of Ms. Sheveliov, due to urgency of the surgery, the director of the Vascular Department at Laniado Hospital Dr. Anton Kabasha stepped in, speeding up the preparation procedure for the operation, and within only five days Ms. Sheveliov found herself at home, recovering from the stroke and the surgery that was successfully performed. Dr. Kabasha notes that “it is a very quick procedure, which was carried out thanks to the full cooperation of the neurological service team and the vascular department team. This surgery is a surgery that requires professional skills and appropriate equipment. I am happy that we were able to provide life-saving treatment in such a short period of time”.

Dr. Shoshana Hadar, the director of the neurological service, explained: “If a stroke is suspected, we are required to work very quickly, together with a multi-system team. This cooperation allows saving lives and preventing significant damage to the quality of life in the future. It is a great pride that such a complex treatment procedure was performed in a very short period of time and that it can be quickly provided to the residents of the area.”
