EXCELLENCE IN INFECTION PREVENTION

MINISTRY OF HEALTH IN ISRAEL REPORT: LANIADO HOSPITAL DEMONSTRATES HIGHLY IMPRESSIVE ACHIEVEMENTS IN INFECTION PREVENTION

The Ministry of Health’s 2025 report on hospital-acquired infections, was published in July 2026, positions Laniado Hospital as one of Israel’s leading medical centers in this critical field.

The 2025 report by the Ministry of Health’s National Center for Infection Control reflects one of the most complex challenges in modern medicine: hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). The report assessed a wide array of departments and units across all hospitals in Israel, with the goal of significantly reducing patient morbidity resulting from these infections. This professional challenge became even more pronounced in 2025 due to the security situation, which forced hospitals to relocate their operations to sheltered underground complexes. This relocation inherently creates overcrowding, complicates the maintenance of strict sterility, and heightens the risk of outbreaks of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, necessitating continuous monitoring and targeted epidemiological investigations.

In two key areas, Laniado Hospital achieved a particularly remarkable milestone: zero acquired infection in both the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Surgical Department. In the NICU, the metric evaluated the dangerous entry of bacteria into the bloodstream, medically known as sepsis. Meanwhile, the Surgical Department recorded zero hospital-acquired urinary tract infections (typically associated with catheterization). The implications of these results are dramatic: in the NICU, sepsis poses an immediate, life-threatening risk to premature infants in their earliest days of life. In the Surgical Department, zero infections in this area prevents severe complications, extended hospital stays, and further health deterioration. These outstanding results were made possible through the collaborative, multidisciplinary efforts of Laniado Hospital’s Infection Control Unit, working hand-in-hand with the NICU and Surgical teams. This was further supported by the hospital’s Training Department, which is dedicated to implementing rigorous hygiene and sterilization protocols across all departments and units.

Prof. Zvi Shimoni, Medical Director of Laniado Hospital, added: “Infection prevention is a cornerstone of modern medicine and patient safety. The national-level achievement of Laniado’s NICU and Surgical Department in the 2025 Ministry of Health report is no coincidence. It is the direct result of the meticulous application of medical protocols, continuous monitoring, strict adherence to hand hygiene, rigorous sterilization, and the implementation of advanced prevention programs in both the NICU and the inpatient wards. These achievements are quite literally life-saving—both for our newborns and our adult patients. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all the departmental teams and the infection control staff for embedding standards of daily excellence.”

Mr. Nadav Chen, CEO of Laniado Hospital, stated following the report’s publication: “These impressive figures are a direct testament to the relentless professional work and profound dedication of our medical and nursing teams. Leading the Israeli healthcare system with zero infections in our most highly sensitive departments, such as the NICU and newborn wards, alongside demonstrating exemplary data of zero urinary tract infections in the Surgical Department, is a badge of honor for us. We will continue to invest the finest resources, technologies, and training programs to ensure that Laniado Hospital remains the safest environment for our patients—from their very first moments of life and throughout any complex medical or surgical procedure.”
