First in Israel: Advanced Sacral Neuromodulator Implantation Performed Under Local Anesthesia at Laniado Hospital
The groundbreaking procedure was performed by the Urology Department, headed by Dr. Matan Mekayten, during a special visit by Prof. Jean-Nicolas Cornu of France, one of the world's leading urologists.
The Urology Department at Laniado Hospital, led by Dr. Matan Mekayten, had the honor of hosting Prof. Jean-Nicolas Cornu last week for a special professional visit and collaboration. Prof. Cornu, Professor of Urology at the University of Rouen Normandy in France, is internationally recognized as a leading expert in urology and serves as a panel chair for the European Association of Urology (EAU) clinical guidelines.
During his visit, Prof. Cornu delivered a lecture to the department’s senior medical staff and personally participated in a groundbreaking surgical procedure—the first of its kind in Israel.
The procedure involved the implantation of a sacral neuromodulation device, commonly referred to as a bladder pacemaker, to treat urinary dysfunction and urinary retention. The implantation was performed entirely under local anesthesia, marking a significant clinical milestone. This approach has the potential to shorten recovery times considerably and reduce the risks associated with general anesthesia.
Prof. Cornu praised the department’s high professional standards, the expertise and dedication of its medical staff, and the advanced medical technologies available at Laniado Hospital. He also expressed his enthusiasm for continued collaboration in the future.
